LAP-BAND® System Surgery at Our Practice in the Northwestern Suburbs of Chicago , Illinois

LAP-BAND® System surgery, offered in the Northwestern Suburbs at our Chicago, Illinois surgical facilities, is the newest, simplest, and least invasive surgical weight loss procedure currently approved by the FDA. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is placed through a surgical procedure, which positions the adjustable band around the upper part of the stomach, creating a small gastric pouch. The pouch allows the patient to eat smaller amounts of food to achieve a sensation of fullness that occurs quickly and lasts for an extended period of time.

The LAP-BAND® System - Adjustable to Suit Your Needs

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, placed during LAP-BAND® System surgery offered in the Northwestern Suburbs at our Chicago, Illinois surgery facilities, is uniquely constructed to be both durable and easy to adjust to a patient’s weight loss and lifestyle needs. The interior of the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band consists of an inflatable tube that your surgeon will fill to the desired volume with saline solution. The port, or access point to the tube, is placed just beneath the skin of the abdomen during surgery. Adjustments to the tightness of the band can be made in response to increased or decreased rates of weight loss and special circumstances such as pregnancy. Tightening the band increases the restriction around the stomach, and reduces the amount of food you can consume. To change the tightness of the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, the doctor inserts a very fine needle into the port to either inject more saline to further inflate the tube or draw saline out if the band is too constrictive. Adjustments can be made in a quick visit to one of our offices.

Reduced Risk of Malnutrition

LAP-BAND® System surgery performed in the Northwestern Suburbs at our Chicago, Illinois surgical facilities is a fully reversible procedure that limits food intake. The stomach and the intestines are not cut or stapled during this procedure, and no part of the digestive system is rerouted. Therefore, food travels through the digestive system in a completely natural way. Though some vitamin supplements may be necessary to ensure optimal health after LAP-BAND® System surgery, the procedure has a low risk of vitamin deficiencies and other nutrition problems associated with more invasive forms of bariatric surgery.

Gradual Weight Loss

Weight loss following a LAP-BAND® System surgery occurs gradually over a period of several months to several years depending upon the individual patient. These results are different from those experienced by patients who undergo the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass procedure—for most Roux-en-Y patients, significant weight loss occurs rapidly during the first three months after surgery. The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Banding System is usually a better choice for patients who are seeking a less invasive procedure with a shorter recovery time. Medical research seems to indicate a slightly lower risk of immediate surgical complications for LAP-BAND® System surgery over Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, although both procedures have been shown to be safe and effective over the long term.
