Preparation for Colonoscopy with Fleets Phospho-soda
IMPORTANT: If you have cardiac or kidney problems, please call the office before starting the following procedure:
Obtain Fleets Phospho-Soda (3 oz.) from your pharmacy or the outpatient pharmacy at your hospital.
The day before your surgery do the following:
- Drink only clear liquids for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Items allowed include: broth, coffee or tea without sugar, strained fruit juice, carbonated beverages, Jello, Kool-aid, Tang and bouillon. Stay on this diet until your examination is over.
- At 7:00 p.m. mix 1/2 bottle of Fleets Phospho-Soda with 8 oz. of water and drink entire mixture. This should be followed by one glass (8 oz.) of water or clear fruit juice.
- Drink at least three (3) 8 oz. portions of clear liquids before going to bed, more if desired. You will start to have watery brown stools, then watery yellow or green stools. Finally, you will pass only clear yellow water with a few flecks.
The day of the Colonoscopy do the following:
- Approximately 3 hours before you leave for the appointment, mix 1/2 bottle of Fleets Phospho-Soda with a 1/2 glass of water (4 oz.) and drink. The bottle of Fleets Phospho-Soda should now be empty.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight except medications.
It is common to have cramps and bloating until your bowel movements start.
If you feel sick or vomit, please call the office at 866.716.KANE (5263).
- You should take your usual medications with a sip of water up until 4 hours before the test.
- You will need someone to drive you home. The medication you will receive will make you too sleepy to drive or work the day of your examination. You will be ready to go home about 3-1/2 hours after arriving. Your ride does not have to wait for you; the nurses can call your ride to pick you up when you are ready.
- You may NOT take public transportation (cab, bus, etc.)=
- If you are taking iron pills, stop taking them 3 days before the test. Stop taking aspirin 5 days before the procedure if possible.
- If you take COUMADIN or TICLID, you usually need to stop 5 days BEFORE the test.
- If you have an abnormal heart valve, please call the office before the procedure.
- Please contact your insurance company to see if pre-certification is required.
