Who Is a Good Candidate for miraDry®?
miraDry® may be right for you if you experience excessive sweating in the underarms that affects your daily life or causes embarrassment. It is suitable for patients of all skin colors. One of our doctors will meet with you for an initial consultation and create a customized treatment plan based on your needs.
What Are the Benefits of miraDry®?
miraDry® is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to treat excessive sweating in the underarms. The treatment is extraordinarily unique, and offers a number of benefits for patients, including:
- Designed to permanently eliminate sweat glands in the underarms
- Can reduce and even eliminate the need for antiperspirants
- Unlike other underarm hyperhidrosis treatment options, miraDry® is designed for permanent results and does not require continuous maintenance procedures
- No incisions are necessary for this treatment
- Little to no downtime is typically required
- Results are often immediate
- Patients can eliminate worries over deodorant stains on clothing, visible sweating in the underarms, and underarm odor
What Happens During the miraDry® Procedure?
miraDry® is an outpatient procedure that usually takes about one hour to complete. The treatment utilizes electromagnetic energy delivered via a guided handpiece to heat the sweat glands in the underarms and ultimately eliminate them. A local anesthetic will be administered before the miraDry® treatment, and the miraDry® technology is equipped with a cooling system to minimize discomfort.
Is miraDry® Safe?
While your body does need sweat glands to properly cool itself, only two percent of the millions of sweat glands in the body are located in the underarms. miraDry®’s elimination of your underarm sweat glands should not affect the body’s overall ability to keep itself cooled. The miraDry® system is designed to treat all skin colors. A local anesthetic is administered before the treatment, and the miraDry® technology is equipped with a cooling system to minimize discomfort during the procedure.
What Is Recovery Like After miraDry®?
Most patients are able to resume normal daily activities right after the procedure; however, some physical exercises should be avoided for a few days following the treatment. Some bruising and swelling in the treatment areas is to be expected, but this should dissipate within a few weeks.
What Are the Side Effects of miraDry®?
miraDry® is a non-invasive procedure with a well-established safety profile. Some bruising and swelling in the treatment areas is to be expected following the procedure, but this should fade within a few weeks. Some patients may also experience temporary soreness or numbness in the underarm area. Most side effects are mild and resolve on their own without intervention. If you have any concerns about side effects following your treatment, we encourage you to contact our office.
What Results Can I Expect from miraDry®?
Results from miraDry® are often immediately noticeable. There should no longer be any perspiration in the armpits after the miraDry® treatment process. Many patients experience the full effects of miraDry® after only one treatment; however, some patients with severe hyperhidrosis may need two treatment sessions to achieve the best outcome.
Does miraDry® Also Reduce Underarm Odor?
Yes, in addition to reducing excessive sweating, miraDry® can also reduce underarm odor. Underarm odor is largely produced by apocrine glands, which are located in the same area as the sweat glands targeted during treatment. Because miraDry® eliminates both sweat and apocrine glands in the underarms, many patients notice a significant reduction in underarm odor following their treatment.
