An article on Becker’s GI & Endoscopy E-Weekly presented recent findings on the intragastric balloon—an innovative weight loss therapy that is growing in popularity. The publication detailed a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology that assessed the weight loss success of intragastric balloons for those with obesity.
The study evaluated 10 controlled trials and 30 observational studies with 5,668 patients. Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that intragastric balloons are more effective than diet at improving metabolic risk factors associated with obesity. In addition, there was a low rate of adverse effects from the weight loss therapy. This study was limited by a small group of patients and limited follow-up.
For more information on these scientific findings, you can read the article here. To learn if intragastric balloon therapy can help you achieve weight loss, please contact us to set up an appointment with one of our experienced bariatric surgeons.
The thyroid is a gland within the endocrine system responsible for secreting hormones into the bloodstream, which work to control how the body uses food for energy. The butterfly-shaped gland is located in the front of the neck and has a major influence on how well the organs are working throughout the body. When the thyroid is not working properly, too much or too little of the hormone is typically released, leading to a number of associated symptoms. The most common issues related to the thyroid include an overactive gland, underactive gland, formation of a lump, or an enlarged gland. Although surgery is not always necessary to treat the thyroid, a resection may be required to effectively improve the gland’s function.
At Suburban Surgical Care Specialists/Kane Center, our experienced doctors perform thyroid surgery most commonly to remove nodules or other abnormalities. Although growths on the thyroid are often benign, they can still affect the balance of hormone secretion. Our surgeons often recommend the removal of these nodules to ensure the thyroid maintains its proper function. If a nodule proves to be malignant, further testing of the area may be necessary to determine if the cancerous cells have spread.
Thyroid surgery involves the use of general anesthesia to ensure the patient remains completely relaxed and comfortable. A very small incision is created at the front of the neck near the thyroid, through which one of our surgeons will operate to carefully remove the nodule using advanced radio-guided imaging technology. More specific details of what a patient can expect during their procedure is discussed during an appointment with their doctor.
A variety of weight loss surgeries are available today, each of which can be very effective for the right candidates. At Suburban Surgical Care Specialists/Kane Center, our doctors perform highly innovative procedures to help patients achieve long-lasting weight loss results.
Two of the most advanced bariatric surgical techniques we offer include the Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch (DS) and the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Both of these procedures are performed laparoscopically, providing our patients with a faster, more comfortable recovery as well as minimal scarring. While they are similar in many ways, the duodenal switch and gastric bypass procedures also have unique differences.
The Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch is ideal for those who suffer from severe morbid obesity, which means they have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 50. During this procedure, a significant portion of the stomach is removed through a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. This limits the amount of food the stomach is able to store, making you feel full with less food. The small intestine is then rerouted to lesser the digestion of calories and nutrients, which is why this is categorized as a “malabsorptive” procedure.
The DS has been shown to help provide long-lasting weight loss results and resolve diseases often linked with obesity. Patients can lose up to 90% of their excess weight. However, since it is a more complex bariatric surgery, the DS comes with more risks—all of which will be discussed in detail with you during your consultation.
The Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is also a malabsorptive procedure that offers great potential for the right patients. The Roux-en-Y works by dividing the stomach into two sections. A small stomach pouch is created to hold food while the other section is rerouted to the small intestine. The stomach pouch is much smaller than what is created in a duodenal switch, therefore allowing less food to be stored.
Patients who undergo the gastric bypass procedure typically lose about two-thirds of their excess weight within only one year. This is possible due to both restricting food and limiting calorie absorption.
To learn whether the duodenal switch or gastric bypass procedure is right for you, please contact us to set up a consultation with one of our experienced bariatric surgeons.
LINX seminar for November 12th is cancelled. Stay Tuned, a new seminar date to follow.
Suburban Surgical Care Specialists is now offering the LINX® Reflux Management System at Alexian Brothers Medical Center for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux.
Patients suffering from symptoms of GERD who are chronically on PPIs to control their symptoms, such as heartburn, nocturnal regurgitation, chronic cough as well as others, are possible candidates for this new procedure. The LINX® System involves the implantation of a small device which takes a relatively short time to implant, and is performed laparoscopically. Patients typically recover quickly and return to normal activities.
The LINX® Reflux Management System is indicated for patients diagnosed with GERD which has been verified with abnormal pH testing. There have been several clinical trials which have shown promising results from placement of this device. The LINX® device has been implanted in approximately 5,000 patients in the past 9 1/2 years. There have been several clinical papers which report promising data including complete cessation of the use of PPIs, with the majority of patients reporting resolution of reflux symptoms, and the overwhelming majority of patients reporting low rates of side effects and high satisfaction rates.
If you are interested in this procedure, and feel you may be a candidate, please contact our office at 847-255-9697 and sign up for a free seminar on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 9-11 a.m. at the Hoffman Estates office.

Our team at Suburban Surgical Care Specialists / Kane Center is committed to offering the safest, most effective treatments available. Among our expansive procedural offering is miraDry®, which is a non-invasive treatment designed to reduce excessive underarm sweating. This advanced solution has helped numerous patients at SSCS successfully diminish odor and visible sweating in their underarms. To further examine the potential of miraDry®, a comparison study was recently conducted to see the difference between six volunteers’ treated underarm versus their untreated underarm.
Four weeks after they underwent miraDry® on one side, they returned to take a test to determine the level of improvement they received. The participants rode a stationary bike in a heated room for about 30 minutes. Following this exercise, pictures were taken to compare both of their underarms. The pictures from this study reveal the noticeable difference between the patients’ treated versus untreated underarms, and they reported being extremely satisfied with the level of reduction they achieved.
The volunteers in this study each had their own motivation for seeking relief from their excessive underarm sweating. This fact, along with the obvious improvement, proves that miraDry® is a viable option for a wide variety of individuals.
Many of our patients at Suburban Surgical Care Specialists have already reaped the benefits of the miraDry® procedure, which can reduce or stop the production of underarm sweat. With the introduction of miraSmooth™, our patients have the option of simultaneously removing underarm hair for skin that can stay smooth and dry.
This FDA-approved treatment utilizes microwave energy to target and eliminate the hair follicles of the underarm as well as reduce new hair growth. In addition, this treatment can stop sweat by stunting the glands, which can provide relief for patients suffering from hyperhidrosis. Since miraSmooth™ has proven effective on all skin types, skin colors, and hair types, the procedure is considered “color-blind” and can help nearly any patient who desires smoother, drier, odor-free underarms. Patients typically experience significant improvement after just one treatment session, though some patients opt for a follow-up treatment to maximize their results.
For more information on miraSmooth™, or to schedule a consultation with one of our specialists, please contact us today.
Among the highly advanced techniques our bariatric surgeons perform, Suburban Surgical Care Specialists/Kane Center (SSCS) offers the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch (DS) for those with severe obesity. This innovative procedure has shown to provide transformative results for those with a body mass index (BMI) close to 50 or higher.
The DS is ideal for those with severe obesity as it allows for optimal weight loss potential. The procedure simultaneously limits food intake and reduces food absorption in the digestive system. This is done by carefully removing a large portion of the stomach, which limits the amount of food you are able to store and, therefore, consume. The remaining pouch is then connected to the end of the small intestine, only allowing digestive juices to absorb a limited amount of the calories you consume.
The DS technique is a complex procedure that our surgeons have been performing laparoscopically for years. To learn if the DS can help you achieve your major weight loss goals, please contact us to schedule your consultation with one of our experienced physicians.
