Studies Show Intragastric Balloons May Be More Effective Than Diet

An article on Becker’s GI & Endoscopy E-Weekly presented recent findings on the intragastric balloon—an innovative weight loss therapy that is growing in popularity. The publication detailed a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology that assessed the weight loss success of intragastric balloons for those with obesity.

The study evaluated 10 controlled trials and 30 observational studies with 5,668 patients. Based on their findings, the researchers concluded that intragastric balloons are more effective than diet at improving metabolic risk factors associated with obesity. In addition, there was a low rate of adverse effects from the weight loss therapy. This study was limited by a small group of patients and limited follow-up.

For more information on these scientific findings, you can read the article here. To learn if intragastric balloon therapy can help you achieve weight loss, please contact us to set up an appointment with one of our experienced bariatric surgeons.

LINX® Reflux Management System Now Available

Suburban Surgical Care Specialists is now offering the LINX® Reflux Management System at Alexian Brothers Medical Center for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux.

Patients suffering from symptoms of GERD who are chronically on PPIs to control their symptoms, such as heartburn, nocturnal regurgitation, chronic cough as well as others, are possible candidates for this new procedure. The LINX® System involves the implantation of a small device which takes a relatively short time to implant, and is performed laparoscopically. Patients typically recover quickly and return to normal activities.

The LINX® Reflux Management System is indicated for patients diagnosed with GERD which has been verified with abnormal pH testing. There have been several clinical trials which have shown promising results from placement of this device. The LINX® device has been implanted in approximately 5,000 patients in the past 9 1/2 years. There have been several clinical papers which report promising data including complete cessation of the use of PPIs, with the majority of patients reporting resolution of reflux symptoms, and the overwhelming majority of patients reporting low rates of side effects and high satisfaction rates.

  • 85% of patients were free of daily PPI medication 5 years after placement
  • 99% of patients reported no bothersome heartburn affecting their sleep
  • 97% of patients required no change to their diet due to heartburn

If you are interested in this procedure, and feel you may be a candidate, please contact our office at 847-255-9697 and sign up for a free seminar on Saturday, November 12, 2016 from 9-11 a.m. at the Hoffman Estates office.

ORBERA™ Non-Surgical Weight Loss Treatment Is Here

Available NowOne size-fits-all rarely does, whether it’s in regard to clothing or medical treatment. Everyone’s body, experiences, needs, and goals are unique — shouldn’t weight loss methods be just as individual? Introducing ORBERA™ Managed Weight Loss System, an FDA-approved, non-surgical approach that can be tailored to your anatomical requirements and desired outcome. Our board certified bariatric surgeons now offer this comprehensive program at our practice, and it may be exactly what you’ve been looking for.

ORBERA™ is different because it combines proven methods and customizes them to your needs and goals. The two-part procedure begins with the non-surgical placement of a balloon in your stomach, which is filled with saline to help you feel full and limit the amount of food that can be consumed. The balloon is inserted through the throat endoscopically, so no incisions will be necessary. The balloon remains in place for six months as you gradually lose weight and adjust to new, smaller portion sizes. After six months, the balloon will be removed — no surgery needed.

The second part of the process is the comprehensive diet, fitness, and weight loss assistance program that will be provided by a team of professionals. You will learn how to make healthier food choices, limit calories, exercise effectively, and improve your overall health. For the six months following removal of the balloon, this weight loss support system will help you continue to lose weight as safely as possible while allowing you to develop the habits that will keep the weight off for the long term.

It’s time to start thinking about weight loss in a different way, and ORBERA™ does just that. If you’re 18 years of age or older with a body mass index (BMI) between 30 and 40, then ORBERA™ may be right for you. Contact us today for more information or to schedule a consultation.
