Chicago Bariatric Surgeon on Minimally-Invasive Technique for Excessive Sweating

Dr. Jonathan Wallace performs a minimally invasive procedure to help his patients address excessive sweating on the hands, underarms, and face.

Chicago, IL – Dr. Jonathan Wallace, a Chicago bariatric surgeon, practices at Suburban Surgical Care Specialists and Kane Center and is dedicated to providing his patients with the highest level of surgical care available. As part of the practice’s surgical offerings, Dr. Wallace provides patients with a solution to hyperhidrosis (the condition of excessive sweating) on the hands, underarms, and face.

According to the American Institute for Hyperhidrosis, excessive sweating is a condition defined as “overly active sweat glands stimulated by the sympathetic branch of the autonomic nervous system.” This branch of the nervous system releases perspiration, which is the natural method the body uses to cool itself. The system becomes particularly active in warm environments and during exercise.

Hyperhidrosis, which affects roughly 4% of the population, can be both socially and professionally debilitating, says Dr. Wallace. The American Institute for Hyperhidrosis notes that people with hyperhidrosis can experience this uncontrolled sweating in any combination of the following body areas:

– Hands
– Underarms
– Face

Dr. Wallace says the primary stimulation for excessive sweat originates from a specific nerve located at the back of the rib cage. In order to address this issue, the Chicago surgeon often performs a safe, effective, and permanent solution utilizing a technique called ETS-C where tiny titanium clamps are placed over the sympathetic nerve. He says this minimally-invasive procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis in about twenty minutes.

According to Dr. Wallace, the ETS-C procedure requires only a small incision under each armpit and is performed under general anesthesia. After the procedure is complete, Dr. Wallace says patients are typically able to return to work within 48 hours and resume all normal physical activity after about one week. Additionally, Dr. Wallace is one of the few surgeons in the Midwest currently performing this life-changing procedure and has helped over 500 patients better their lives.

Ultimately, Dr. Wallace says patients who undergo treatment for hyperhidrosis no longer experience excessive sweating and often experience increased levels of confidence. According to him, his Chicago hyperhidrosis treatment patients report that they now lead happier lives, free from worry or embarrassment. In the end, Dr. Wallace says one should always seek a qualified and experienced surgeon in order to ensure he or she receives the most effective results possible.
